Laser Types

Each of these laser types brings unique advantages and specific applications in dentistry, revolutionizing various dental procedures with enhanced precision, comfort, and healing outcomes.

CO2 Laser

CO2 lasers, with their high affinity for soft tissues, are excellent for procedures like gingivectomy and soft tissue crown lengthening, offering minimal bleeding and rapid healing. Diode lasers, known for their versatility, are used extensively for soft tissue procedures, periodontal treatments, and for their bactericidal effects in endodontic therapy.

    • Wavelength: The CO2 laser operates at a wavelength of 10,600 nm & 9,300nm. This wavelength is highly absorbed by water and hydroxyapatite, making it very effective in cutting through soft tissue and bone.
    • Applications: It's primarily used for soft tissue surgeries such as gingivectomy, frenectomy, and for treating periodontal disease. Its ability to cut and coagulate simultaneously reduces bleeding and promotes faster healing.
    • Tissue Interaction: CO2 lasers are less suitable for procedures involving hard tissues like enamel and dentin due to their high absorption by water.
    • Healing and Recovery: The CO2 laser tends to create a more pronounced thermal effect, which can result in slower healing compared to diode lasers.

Diode Laser

Diode lasers, known for their versatility, are used extensively for soft tissue procedures, periodontal treatments, and for their bactericidal effects in endodontic therapy.

    • Wavelength: Diode lasers typically operate in the range of 810 to 980 nm. These wavelengths are less absorbed by water and more by pigmented tissues like melanin and hemoglobin.
    • Applications: Diode lasers are used mainly for soft tissue procedures, such as contouring the gums, treating periodontal pockets, and for biostimulation. They are less effective for cutting hard tissues.
    • Tissue Interaction: They are known for their precision and minimal thermal damage to surrounding tissues.

Erbium Lasers

Erbium lasers, especially those using the Erbium:YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) medium, have transformed dental procedures with their exceptional precision and minimal thermal impact. Operating at a wavelength of 2940 nanometers, these lasers are superbly efficient at absorbing water, making them highly effective for soft and hard tissue treatments in dentistry.

  • Cavity Preparation: Erbium lasers enable precise and painless cavity preparation, often without the need for anesthesia.
  • Gum Contouring: Ideal for reshaping gums with minimal bleeding and faster healing times.
  • Tooth Sensitivity Treatment: Effectively treats tooth sensitivity by sealing tubules on the tooth's root surface.

Nd:YAG Lasers

Nd:YAG (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) lasers are a versatile tool in modern dentistry, emitting light at a wavelength of 1064 nanometers. These lasers are particularly effective for soft tissue procedures, offering precision and reduced healing times.

  • Periodontal Therapy: Ideal for treating periodontal disease, removing diseased tissue while promoting regeneration.
  • Soft Tissue Surgery: Useful for frenectomies, gingivectomies, and other soft tissue surgeries, with less bleeding and discomfort.
  • Tooth Whitening: Enhances the effectiveness of bleaching agents for faster, more noticeable tooth whitening.
